When Casa girls meet..

Assalamualaikum.

I finished my finals on April 25th at 9pm.I went to Trisha's and then went back home.Seriously, I felt like punching someone after my Econ paper.Really.Anyways, I slept like a baby and when i woke up in the morning, I curled in bed watching TV shows that I missed for the past two weeks or so.I knew that Munie and Amal is going to come later that day but I just can't get my butt out of bed.Not until I got a text from Munie saying they'll be arriving in two hours.OH BOY I PANICKED!

I'm sure you know how messy your apartment can be during exam times. The laundry and dishes neglected.Kalau da bertunang boleh cancel if bakal mertua datang. It's THAT bad.SO I scrambled out of bed,put music on, and get cleaning going.Put on my lavender scented oil burning,I stashed, organized and vacuumed.I should have showered earlier and leave right away for the bust station but me being me,can't decide what to wear,I was late.Teehee.

Not only that,I got lost at Berri-UQAM metro station too.I've been there for at least a dozen times!Sofhan,Sofhan.I went out through the St-Denis exit instead of the bus station exit.=.=' My dearest Munie and Amal were kindly waiting for me as I huffed and puffed.Jogathon gitu in my skirt and all.

Amal,Munie and I go wayy back to the Taylor's College days. Munie was my housemate, who turns out to be the daughter of my mum's friend during her university times in Iowa. A bit like Sisterhood of Travelling Pants. =p
From the first day, she was the nicest, kindest, happiest, cuddliest human being I've ever met. With her winning smile, edgy sense of style,I LOVE EVERY INCH OF HER!EVERY INCH!
MeeeMaaaMoooo
Amal was our unofficial housemate. One day I saw her lepaking in our 0708 living room. The next day I saw her again. And let’s just say our living room became her bedroom. Complete with her cow pillow and blanket. She has her own shelve in our kitchen cabinet and what not. She only goes back to her apartment to shower and change. Other times, she's ours. Amal is my adorable innocent gangster. There's a bit of tomboy-ish sense in her style of clothing and oh! She's the funny one in our group! FUNN-EH! She makes up all of these weird combination of words to describe things.
One joke that I simply love is, "Mat Salleh ni zombie pun takut,if nampak hantu Malaysia, lari tak cukup tanah!".This joke had me smiling on my own on my way to the exam halls.Amal..amal..

This is my cutie pie Amal

When I tell my friend that I used to share an apartment with 6 other girls, she was shocked. Well, that doesn't include our unofficial housemates and guests that comes everyday. Someone told me that I'm lucky to have these girls as my housemates because although we have to wait for the bathroom, and our apartment can be messy from our Calculus Project and whatever projects that the Engineering students had to do (sorry Ainaa!) but we managed. In fact, our friendship was that strong that until today, all of us STILL try to get in contact with each other despite being in different parts of the world. Most students decide on a university where a lot of their friends are planning to go there too. For us, we all chose what our hearts want. It may be hard at first, we all suffered from the lack of love and friends and what not for the first year, but to be honest, we all had our own goals and dreams, even if that takes us away from our friends, it'll only be for four years, plus, there's skype and facebook and whatever kind of methods to get in touch with each other.

Well, they are my girls, my Casa Girls they say..sounds a bit wrong to me, but as long as we’re happy!

Thursday April 26th:
So Amal and Munie came for the second time to Montreal last month.
We head back, rested a bit and head out to Tres Amigos. Whenever my friends come over to Montreal, I’d definitely bring them here. The food is DELISH, the ambiance is cool and funky, the waiters are efficient and hot. Haha! The last part is a plus I must say! What I realize is that,in the early evening,Tres Amigos music are less loud and finding a seat is not a problem. For the gazillion time, I ordered their Vanilla Prawn!
Oh the creaminess of the sauce on the rice and the giant prawns grille to perfection..Ohh la la! We were so hungry that we ate the nachos to the very bottom of the small basket. That's how hungry we were.
They have Virgin Pina Coladas too. It’s to die for. Really. To die for.

Then we went to the grocery store to pick up some food and walked back home along St Catherine. Yes, the shopping street. We stopped at a few stores and were surprised to learn that one of the cute small boutique near Guy area is owned by a Malaysian. Here I am saying to Amal.."Pakaian ini nampak murahan kan?” trying not to sound obnoxious in the store and suddenly the owner was like, “are you guys Malaysian? Me too.”So girls guys, speaking Malay in a foreign country sometimes doesn't help.;p
HAMBIK!

It was raining pretty hard then. I had a cute umbrella with me. Since it’s THAT cute, it can’t fit all three of us. =.=’

We went to the dollar store to get some supplies, the to American Apparel for Munie's gazillionth denim top, Urban Outfitters (because I didn't get to bring Munie there last time) and other few places where I simply can't find a dress that I like. I told myself I could treat myself to a new purse I saw at Urban Planet after my exams. That too was no longer there. I'm still using the purse I got as a door gift from my second cousin's wedding.

We were trying to find me a dress for an event the next Friday. But nope, the dress that I wanted was sold out. SOLD FREAKING OUT. Even the purse that I told myself that I could only get after my exams is over. Tak rezeki. I could save that money kan?

We went back and it was pretty cold. We all just lay there. We lighted my lanterns and just cuddled on the bed laughing and sharing some stories while waiting for the deliver guy to deliver my groceries. I’m such a princess! I always get my groceries delivered.(Nanti sakit badan xde siapa nak urut).
But after awhile we laid there saying nothing. Maybe we’re just too tired or maybe we run out of stories. Whatever it is, it feels so amazing, that when you have good company, you don’t need to say anything to make things perfect.=’)

Friday April 27th:
We woke up late and had Nasi Goreng and Baked Chicken for brunch.
We then decided to explore Little Italy. It was pretty cold that day. We did only a BIT of exploring. Went to Little Italy and BOOM!!!!found to thrift stores that I fell in love with! I love thrift stores!!

Then we went to the poutine place La Banquise.Which all of us ordered our own poutine AND onion rings.Only Munie could finish hers!Hah!!Thgat is he place where I first leaned to ea onion rings with honey.DELISH!

We then headed to Future Shop and got me a camera.:)

Later on that night, we made Young Tau Foo for supper.Yeay!(then mengadu gemuk!lol)=)

Saturday April 28th:
I really really really wanted to take them to Chez Cora and that morning I did! Apparently they have Chez Cora too at Munie’s place. Oh well. Most of the times I’ve been there, I’ve been ordering the same thing over and over again!!=P

The whole morning were spent on my floor making these babies. But turns out none of us are that into cupcakes. Don’t get me wrong. I love making cupcakes but I don’t really like eating them and so does Amal.

We then headed off to the Old Port. We had serious fun! At first we were just walking and enjoying the view. Whenever I’m in Old Port I like to go to Restaurant des Gouverneurs because their lunch set is always yummy and I love their service! They are always so nice and so helpful. I was telling my friend that we should try something else. Alhamdulillah. Rezeki bergolek2. We went to this French restaurant called Le Senatuer, where they have Halal lamb on their menu. Their service is flawless too. These are the kinds of places that you really don’t mind tipping: =)

At Le Senateur
Then we took our cameras out and had some serious photo shooting done!!It was dusk by then. With the old buildings and dim light, and oh, Amal being a professional we sure had a lot of fun. Do you know that she is the photographer for MSA in Windsor Uni? Yeppp. That’s my friend over there! SO so so proud of her!=)

What kind of a visit would it be without stopping at Juliette et Chocolat? There was a line when we got there but we ended up talking all the way inside. It’s amazing how easily I opened up to them. Things that I’m too embarrassed to share just simply came out from my mouth. We had a little tazkirah/spiritual talk along the way too.*so blessed*.By the end of the meal, we’re just toooooo tried and headed back home.

Sunday April 29th:
The day that Munie had to go back to Malysia.=(
That morning we had a picnic at the Old Port. I bought the baguette a few days back. BAD IDEA. It’s like eating a rock. Really. If its warmed it fine. Since we’re in the middle of the field with cold wind blowing on our faces, so no. Our bread was far from being warm! We had some strawberry soda too! I saw this picture on Tumblr and was totally inspired!:)

Strawberry Sodas!:)

Picnic!
After eating we went for some beaver’s tail.
Oh these are NOT beaver tails!:p
That evening we had to send Munie off. Two days later, Amal had to leave too.

Everytime, I’ll feel so blessed to have met these girls that could make me feel at home. Anytime. Alhamdulillah. May Allah bless us all with long-lasting friendship Dunia Akhirah!

This is a longgg post.

This is how crazy we can get.=)

P/s: Will do a review on each of the restaurants mentioned InsyaAllah!

Take care and love your friends, sisters, brothers around you. They are there for a reason!

Honey Lemon Chicken

Assalamualaikum!

Have you ever had a sudden craving for meat or chicken?I DO!! Barbecued meat, chicken or seafood are my favourite! Imagine...calamari wrapped in a banana leaf barbecued to perfection.then you slowly squeeze lime on your calamari and dip it into a hot and sweet sauce.HUARGH!!!!!*Me want*

Since the store that I went to didnt have whole chicken that is cut into pieces I bought two chicken thighs.I usually marinate the chicken with oyster sauce, black pepper and salt. But not this time.I find that baking a chicken saves a whole lot of time.Especially during exam times when you really don't have the time to chop he onion, wait for the gravy to thicken and it is even worse when you don't have enough ingredinents!
I eat a lot especially during exam times. I'm the kind of person who can't study if I'm hungry.=(

So if you're like me, this recipe is perfect for you.

Sorry for the oh-not-so-good-pictures.I told you, I made this during exam times. My mum asked, why the plates in my pictures are always the same.D'uh orang bujang nak beli banyak set bukan ada kenduri..Haha!Set of four ni pun xberapa nak pakai.Mummy..mummy..Can't wait to go back!!I planned to bake something nasty this evening but since I'll be using whipped cream,it's better to be eaten straight away.Since I'm here alone and wasn't planning to invite anyone over, I decided to postpone that sinful project.

Take time to make good food.I always find that eating with someone else is always a pleasure.Food really does connect people.

Take care.Wasalam

Vat?!No Cookie?!

Assalamualaikum!

So I’m writing this now as a reward for myself for finishing some of my readings for PSYC 311.Alhamdulillah.Such a hectic hectic day! Had breakfast with Hayati and we had a good conversation about books. Oh books!!!Was late for my class and rushed to an appointment and turns out I was an hour early.yepppp.AN HOUR! Stopped by Alexis Nihon and picked up a couple of stuffs for my Sunshine (who is currently sleeping like nobody’s business on my lap. yes. I’m typing with one hand) and came back. Phewwwwww!(ni baru anak satu..=.=’)

So a couple of weeks back I made this cupcakes.ADOHWABLE Cookie Monster Cupcakes.

At first I thought its going to be tricky with all the icing and what not. I mean really, cookie monster IS hairy. What made me do it? Three things, 1) I saw Salmanee posting Elmo cuppies if I’m not mistaken on Trish’s wall.2) Munie and Amal came to Monty!!Before coming, Amal said about wanting to bake/cook with me. Plus  Amal loves all of these cute quirky things!3) The idea came during exam time and I only have crazy baking ideas during those times. So I googled the tutorial. This is the one that I ended up watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT7WS0Q1lOM
I realize that I have most of the ingredients at home. Except the white chocolate eyes! So the quest of finding edible eyes begins! After gazillion stores, we settled for Hershey’s Drop Cookies. Talk about Cookies!
They are DELISH btw!

Cookie Monster Cupcakes

20 Cupcakes of any flavor
Blue Coloring
½ cup Betty Crocker’s Icing (Any kind would do!)
½ cup Coconut flakes
1 packet Hershey’s Drop Cookies
Chocolate Sprinkles
18 Mini Chocolate chip cookies

  1. In a bowl, add coloring to the icing. Add drop by drop until you get the right shade of baby blue.
  2. Put the Coconut flakes in a Ziploc and add a few drops of coloring and shake well (it’s always good to start with only a small drop and adding little by little).Put this in a medium bowl for easy dipping.
  3. Put the chocolate sprinkles in a bowl and add a few drops of water.
  4. Put it in the microwave for 20 seconds.
  5. Start by spreading the icing on the cupcakes.
  6. Dip the top of your cupcakes in the coconut flake bowl.
  7. Using a knife, cut the side of the cupcake horizontally and another one at an angle.
  8. Cut ¼ of a cookie, and press the bigger piece slowly in the cavity made.
  9. Put a bit of icing at the back of the Hershey’s Drop Cookies, and place it on the cupcake as eyes.
  10. Use the melted chocolate sprinkles to make the pupil. (Remember that Cookie Monster’s eyes are crazy!)

Add in the coloring
Cookie Monster Blue:)

Cookie Monster's Fur.EWWW!It's fur right?or hair?

Trim those lumps off.Trimm it..Trimmmm ittt!

It looks soo innocent on its own.really.

3/4 of the cookie goes to the Cookie Monster mouth, the rest, ends up in  mine.:)

Gigiku ngak bolong!Lol!

Add the eyes...

You could make two Cookie Monsters..

or

Four?

or

a plateful?

or

TWO platefuls?

Tangan di dada, mata ke atas.....

Sorry.I kept on having these funny thoughts in my mind.It must Amal's fault! Both Amal and Munie made me watch Jozan and what not.=.=' LAST PAYPER LAST PAYPER!=P
It easy and fun!Munie, Amal and I had a BLAST making this cupcakes! With the same method perhaps you could try making Oscar or Elmo too!:)
They sure make people smile!Enjoy!

Wasalam!

Vanilla Buttercream Icing

Assalamualaikum!

Finally!I finally have internet at home! Oh how did I live without it before? I don’t need it when I have friends around but when you live alone with your cat, you’re bound to get lonely. Really. I was telling myself I should be memorizing the anatomy of the brain and finish my readings for PSYC 311 but still, I used my phone every now and then to check my twitter, Facebook and email.(Macam-macam dunia sekarang..sigh)

I have been religiously posting this and that and I really really want to write something tonight. Although there are other few things that I’d love to write about, it’ll take time. So I was thinking of something that I’d like to share but won’t take much time to write. Ding Ding Ding!I was like, why not write about the Vanilla Buttercream Icing that I did the other day?!

So my friends held an all girls party at their place and I volunteered to bake cupcakes for them. But since I got the confirmation for the party the night before and I have class the next day, I didn’t have time to rush to the store and get some other stuffs that I need to make funky cupcakes. Even then, I don’t have any solid ideas in mind anyways. So I opted to make the buttercream icing with the usual chocolate cupcakes. But then I was thinking, what KIND of buttercream icing would people like? There are endless kinds of buttercream icing. For me, I’d love coffee icing! Chocolate icing would be too much for a chocolate cupcake and I don’t like citrus-y flavors with chocolate. So I settled on Vanilla Buttercream Icing. To make them a lot more fun, I piped them nicely and sprinkled colored coconut flakes on it.

Vanilla Buttercream Icing
1 cup of softened butter
2 ½ cup of icing sugar
1 tablespoon of vanilla essence
2 tablespoon of milk
Coloring
  1. In a mixing bowl cream the butter until light and fluffy
  2. Add sugar ½ cup at a time and mix slowly until they are well blended,
  3. Add in the vanilla essence and milk.
  4. If you want to add color, separate equal amount of icing in glass or metal bowls (plastic bowls might absorb color)
  5. Add drops of coloring until you get the color that you want.
Coconut flakes sprinkles
1 tablespoon coconut flakes
A dash of salt
Coloring
  1. In a ziplock bag, add a tablespoon of coconut flakes and a pinch of salt.
  2. Add a drop or two coloring.
  3. Zip it and shake well. If the color is too pale, add more and repeat previous steps.
Decorating cupcakes
You could simply use a spatula or butter knife tu spread it on your cupcakes or you could pipe them instead.
I used different contrasting colors for my icing and my coconut flakes and they look..KIH-YUT! (angkat bakul!)

Butt-ah!

My blue looks greenish...=(

Salted coconut flakes

Pink ones

Blue ones

The pink and blue theme is to match the cute cupcake cups! It's so cute!I swear!:)
Some of the icings weren't that perfect. Why? Me being a Jinnyus (pronounced as genius), didn't bring my piping bags with me and used ziplocks instead. So they kept on bursting. It was a delicious mess I tell ya.=___='
Oh if you're on a diet.DON'T MAKE THESE.I calculated the calories and pftt an icing, just the icing for a cupcake could be up to 200 cals.AYAYAYAY!
So take care of yourself and those you love!

Summerset Sole,Featuring Miss Trisha Islam

Assalamualaikum!

My Montreal Experience

So I have been very lucky to be roomates with my lovely Trisha Islam for the past couple of days.Too bad she had to leave for Toronto this morning and later to Bangladesh.I'm so proud of her.So young and already going places and inching closer to her dreams. The way she talks about Bangladesh, the people, the politics,  AND ESPECIALLY THE FOOD!
So the other day,I came home from school and she made me lunch. This girl, always says that she can't cook.PFSH!(I sound so much like her.=p)She's lying.HER FOOD IS ALWAYS SCRUMPTIOUS.ALWAYS!She made butter chicken and tandoori from scratch!Yep,I'm THAT lucky!
So the other day she made me fish which was so good that I saved the fish for last. She didn't have a name for it so I decided to call it Summerset Sole. Why?It's fried Sole with black pepper and Havarti cheese on a bed of chunky tomato sauce.Go ahead and reread that all over again. The meal it self is sooo summer-y so thats why I decided to call the dish Summerset Sole.

Summerset Sole
300gram of Sole fish
1 tomato,diced
1 onion,diced
¼ cup of havarti cheese
oil
salt
pepper
  1. In a frying pan sautee the onion until it caramelizes.
  2. Add the tomato into the pan.As the tomato soften, use a fork to crush the chunks.
  3. Add add salt and pepper.Set aside.
  4. In the same pan,add some more oil (if needed) and fry both side of fish once.
  5. Sprinkle some salt and pepper to taste, and re-fry both sides.
  6. Serve fish with sauce and shredded havarti cheese on top.

On the side is salad with feta and balsamic vinegar

Like sunset, this dish can make you cry. It's THAT good.

Alhamdulillah for good food and great friends.I'm lucky they come together.;)
